How to host a computer

In this article, you’ll learn how to set up and enable a computer as a host in Chromaport.

Hosting is a core part of how Chromaport works. It allows your computer to share its applications or desktop so they can be accessed remotely from other devices such as a phone, tablet, or another computer.

Getting started

After installing, logging into the Chromaport application, and creating your workspace, the next step is to add a computer to your workspace to enable hosting.

Right after creating a workspace, you will see the status: 'Hosting disabled'
This means that your computer (host) is not yet accessible remotely.

To enable hosting, you need to add your computer to the workspace and assign it to your current device. Once assigned, the status will change to: Hosting as: [computer name]' with the status 'Running'

This indicates that your computer is now active and available as a host.

For more details about different hosting states, see the article: 'Hosting statuses'.

Step 1: Add a computer

To enable hosting:

  • Install the Chromaport application on the computer you want to use as a host
  • Log in and add this computer to your workspace from that device
  • Assign the computer to your current device by clicking "Start hosting"

Once added, the computer becomes available for hosting and is ready for you to add applications you want to stream.

Note

You only need to add each computer to your workspace once (from the physical device). After that, you can add applications to it from other devices, as long as you know the correct app path or app command.

Step 2: Add applications

To fully use your host computer, you need to add applications that you want to access remotely.

You can do this in several ways:

  • Add apps based on this computer – select applications installed on the current machine
  • Add app based on existing workspace app – reuse an existing app configuration if you’ve already added it from another computer (the app path/app command must match)
  • Add app manually – in specific cases define the app path or command yourself

Once applications are added, they become available to launch from any connected client device.

How hosting works

When hosting is enabled, your computer becomes the source device that runs applications and streams them over the internet. Other devices (clients) can connect to it and interact with it in real time.

This allows you to:

  • Access your computer remotely
  • Launch and use applications from another device
  • Work, play, or create without being physically at your machine
Important note

For optimal performance, make sure:
The host computer has sufficient upload speed.
The client device has adequate download speed
Your connection is stable and low-latency
A weak connection may result in lag or reduced streaming quality.

Summary

Hosting a computer in Chromaport allows you to unlock remote access to your apps and desktop. Once your computer is added to a workspace and hosting is active, you can stream and control it from any supported device, giving you full flexibility across locations and devices.
